I won C.L.Taylors book giveaway on facebook and I was so thrilled and excited since I was a fan of her book The Missing which is when I first discovered her and couldn't wait to read her newest book which is out October 19th.
I could not put this book down and read it within three days as plans seem to get in the way of finishing this book sooner and I've just gotten round to writing this review. It's fast paced and gripping right from the start. The story is about Drew Finch, a teenager who's brother has been sent to a reforming school for wayward and rebellious teenagers, up north of England (there are a few references to Newcastle and the Geordie accent which made me giddy) One day Drew meets Dr Cobey who mysteriously hands Drew a letter from her brother telling her that the school has been brainwashing kids, dismissing this as a prank she then starts to seriously worry. Drew does a bit of Nancy's Drew-ing (I'm sorry for the terrible pun) and gets to work researching the school with no luck until the mysterious Zed shows her the consequences of going to Norton House. Drew hatches a plan to get herself inside the school and free her brother before he is turned into a brainwashed stepford wives teenager. It totally has stepford wives vibes to it, minus the robots. Taylor describes her novel as "Prison Break meets One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest".
This is most definitely my favourite book I've read so far this year. I adored Drew, and her ability to keep fighting and the friends and enemies she encounters along the way. With twists and turns this book keeps you on the edge. There's a bit in the book that I won't spoil but was cleverly done, the direction in which it went suprised me. I kept thinking to myself that this could easily be adapted into a film.
This is Taylor's first young adult novel and she nailed it on the head. The ending made me want a second novel. Maybes that was just me. But I felt like Drew may have more adventures in the future. I do wish the ending wasn't wrapped up like a stuffed burrito though. It was too rushed, I would have liked the ending spaced out. Maybes that's just because I didn't want it to end at all. I gave this book five stars on goodreads and I highly recommend if you love YA and thrillers, then please pick this book up in October and check out Taylor's other pieces of work too!
I would 100% read again.
